Core-Periphery in Networks: An Axiomatic Approach

چکیده
Recent evidence shows that in many societies worldwide the relative sizes of the economic and social elites are continuously shrinking. Is this a natural social phenomenon? What are the forces that shape this process? We try to address these questions by studying a Core-Periphery social structure composed of a social elite, namely, a relatively small but well-connected and highly influential group of powerful individuals, and the rest of society, the periphery. Herein, we present a novel axiom-based model for the forces governing the mutual influences between the elite and the periphery. Assuming a simple set of axioms, capturing the elite’s dominance, robustness, compactness and density, we are able to draw strong conclusions about the elite-periphery structure. In particular, we show that a balance of powers between elite and periphery and an elite size that is sub-linear in the network size are universal properties of elites in social networks that satisfy our axioms. We note that the latter is in controversy to the common belief that the elite size converges to a linear fraction of society (most recently claimed to be 1%). We accompany these findings with a large scale empirical study on about 100 real-world networks, which supports our results. §Department of Communication Systems Engineering, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel. Brief Announcements / Back Matter
Motivated by the structure of social networks, this paper initiates a study of distributed algorithms in networks that exhibit a core-periphery structure. Such networks contain two distinct groups of nodes: a large and sparse, group identified as the periphery, which is loosely organized around a small, and densely connected group identified as the core. We identify four basic properties that a...
متن کاملAn Investigation of World-System Theory and Globalization in the Rama Novels by Arthur C. Clarke and Gentry Lee
Noam Chomsky argues that only a meager percentage of the world, consisting of mainly large corporations and developed nations, prosper from globalization. As stated in Immanuel Wallerstein’s World-System Theory, the modern system of the world, which is constructed according to the economic status of nations, can be divided into three levels: the core, the semi-periphery, and the periphery. Whil...
متن کاملMulticore-periphery structure in networks
Many real-world networked systems exhibit a multicore-periphery structure, i.e., multiple cores, each of which contains densely connected elements, surrounded by sparsely connected elements that define the periphery. Identification of the multiple-periphery structure can provide a new handle on structures and functions of various complex networks, such as cognitive and biological networks, food...
متن کاملA Unified Method of Detecting Core-Periphery Structure and Community Structure in Networks
The core-periphery structure and the community structure are two typical meso-scale structures in complex networks. Although community detection has been extensively investigated from different perspectives, the definition and the detection of the core-periphery structure have not received much attention. Furthermore, the detection problems of the core-periphery and community structure were sep...
متن کاملA simulated annealing heuristic for maximum correlation core/periphery partitioning of binary networks
A popular objective criterion for partitioning a set of actors into core and periphery subsets is the maximization of the correlation between an ideal and observed structure associated with intra-core and intra-periphery ties. The resulting optimization problem has commonly been tackled using heuristic procedures such as relocation algorithms, genetic algorithms, and simulated annealing. In thi...
